Exhibits Registrar

The Exhibits Registrar is responsible for the scheduling and installation of artifacts selected for exhibit and managing the packing of artifacts and transportation of artifacts between all buildings operated by the Missouri History Museum. The Exhibits Registrar will track the movement of collections within all buildings, develop exhibition checklists and supervise installation and de-installations of artifacts. The position will be responsible for managing exhibits databases and working with the Collections Management System Administrator to see that all applicable data is complete and updated. Prepares conditions reports, maintains loan and rotation records. They are responsible for corresponding with borrowers/lenders regarding packing and shipping requirements. They ensure that professional packing, shipping, handling, and storage methods are followed according to best practices. The Exhibits Registrar should be familiar with all aspects of museum collections responsibility, according to national professional standards and best practices.

The Exhibits Registrar adheres to MHM policies and procedures and in furthering institutional initiatives as needed.  

Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the professional standards for the shipping, valuation and insurance, handling, housing, exhibiting, and documentation of historical objects.  Experience in loan negotiation for traveling exhibitions is desirable.  Excellent written and verbal communications skills required.  Ability to work with minimal day-to-day supervision in a collaborative environment.  Ability to assist in planning production schedule and proven record in adhering to project schedules and budgets.

MA degree in history, museum studies, art, or related field. This is a key position requiring a Minimum of 3 Years of Experience in museum registration with progressive responsibilities and proven experience working with art or historic artifacts.

In 2009 the National Churchill Museum was recognized as such by the United States Congress and is now at the beginning of an ambitious strategic plan to fulfill its mission in line with this new, national mandate. The successful candidate for this post will be capable of managing and improving all aspects of the Museum’s operations while also providing an important deputizing role to the Executive Director. The Assistant Director will likely have experience in the field of not-for-profit management, be entrepreneurial, be able to manage the Museum’s accounts and will be expected to contribute to marketing and development activities. This individual needs also to be comfortable addressing groups and adept at interacting with a broad cross section of the Museum’s wider constituency from Board Members, Museum visitors, the faculty, staff and students at Westminster College and current and prospective donors. Education: College degree in Accounting/ Business Management/ Museum Studies or related field. Experience: A minimum of two years in positions of progressive responsibility in office management, business management, not-for-profit management or Museum management is required; Five to seven years’ experience in these or related field is preferred.
