Free Training on Preservation & Arrangement/Description
As part of the Missouri Historical Records Grant Program (MHRGP),
which provides funding and training for records projects throughout
the state, workshops on the preservation and arrangement of historical
records will be offered in March. Anyone receiving funding from the
MHRGP must attend a workshop, but others responsible for the care of
Missouri’s original records are also encouraged to attend. All
training workshops will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and be taught
by staff from the Missouri State Archives and/or the State Historical
Society of Missouri.
The workshop on preservation will emphasize practical ways to build
preservation programs in archives and historical societies,
particularly as related to papers, books, and photographs. Topics will
include environmental control, storage and housing, appropriate
supplies, proper handling, and disaster preparedness. This workshop
will be offered twice in March:
· Friday, March 11; Greene County Archives and Records Center,
1126 Boonville, Springfield, MO
· Wednesday, March 23; Curry Library, William Jewell College,
500 College Hill, Liberty, MO
The arrangement and description workshop will explore how to organize
and make ready-for-use record collections being held in archives and
historical societies. Topics will include how to determine what
records to collect, the legal requirements for accepting records, and
how to arrange and describe collections so that researchers can
utilize them. Among other things, participants will learn how to
write a mission statement, collection policy, deed of gift, and
finding aid. This workshop will be offered once in March:
· Wednesday, March 16; Poplar Bluff Public Library, 318 North
Main St., Poplar Bluff, MO
Workshop participants are required to pre-register, and attendance is
limited to 25 people. Anyone interested in registering for the
workshop should call 573-751-4303 or email mhrgp@sos.mo.gov.
The MHRGP is coordinated by the Missouri Historical Records Advisory
Board (MHRAB), with financial support from the National Historical
Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). For more information on
