In the Fall 2021, an exhibition tracing the history of the gay rights movement was removed from display at the Missouri State Museum in the State Capitol. This removal has raised questions about that decision’s effect on the future of LGBTQIA+-themed public history projects, collecting initiatives, and programming and funding for that work.

Join panelists working in this area of museum, archives, and public history to discuss “Where do we go from here?”. Participants include the co-curators of the UMKC exhibition, Dr. Christopher Cantwell (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Kate Carpenter (PhD candidate, Princeto)n; Christopher Leitch, co-founder of the Gay and Lesbian Archives of Mid-America; Sharon Smith, Curator of Civic and Personal Identity, Missouri Historical Society; and Miranda Rectenwald, Curator of Local History, Washington University.

MAMA Board Kansas City Area Representative Tara Laver (Nelson-Atkins) will moderate the discussion.

MAMA thanks the Missouri Humanities Council for support of this programming.
